Coleman Saluspa vs Intex Purespa

I don’t know who invented the inflatable hot tub, but as long as people like them exist, I feel like all is well in the world. And if you don't know what I’m talking about – you clearly haven’t soaked in a hot tub lately. Inflatable hot tubs are one of the precious gifts endowed to us from companies like Coleman and Intex, for which we are ever grateful. But even the givers of all things good should be looked at objectively, and today we’ll attempt to find out which hot tub rightfully should end up in your backyard.

Heat and jets
When it comes to hot tubs, two things are top priority: how hot are they, and how strong can they massage? These may or may not be the very same questions I use when choosing a massage therapist. The Coleman SaluSpa can reach a temperature of up to 104° F, and boasts 114 AirJets for a relaxing massage. There’s even a digital control panel to ensure that you have full temperature control.

The Intex PureSpa features a whopping 170 “high-powered” jets. Their words, not mine. And just like the Coleman, the Intex reaches a maximum temperature of 104°F, and comes with a digital control panel – but! Drumroll, please….This control panel is tilt-adjustable! Which means no more standing on one’s head to see or adjust the temperature. This folks, is real, modern progress.

Capacity
The Coleman can fit 4 people comfortably. Or 6 people uncomfortably, take your pick. It holds 242 gallons of water at 80%. And with 4-6 people inside, you definitely don’t want to fill it more than 80%, or you’ll end up with a small version of Niagara Falls! It’s 77” wide (and long) and 28” deep, with the inner size (where you sit) being 56” wide. So I mean, yes 6 people could technically fit…like sardines in a can.

The Intex comes in 2 sizes: 4 person and 6 person. The 4 person is the same size as the Coleman (77” by 77” by 28”) and it holds 210 gallons – although it doesn’t state the capacity, and there’s no info on the measurement of the inner size. The 6 person is 85” by 85” by 25”, and holds 290 gallons. Definitely more comfortable for 6, I’m just saying.

Material and assembly
The Coleman spa is made of puncture-proof, durable Tritech material that’s UV resistant. Which is good, because nothing makes a spa look older and sadder than sun damage. Myself and spas alike, actually. No tools are required to put the Coleman together, simply attach the included pump and the spa blows itself up. Well, not explosively “blown up” – you know what I meant!

The Intex is made of puncture-resistant laminate PVC material, featuring their patented FiberTech construction. I’m not sure what that means, but it sounds good! Some assembly is required, although the company is a bit ambiguous on what exactly is required (and what tools, if any). Some reviews mention it was easy to assemble, so at least it was easy. Whatever “it” was.

Maintenance
The Coleman features a built-in ChemConnect chlorine dispenser that disperses the right amount of chlorine for the size of the tub. On one hand, it’s convenient. On the other, you have to trust that it’s working properly. But as long as one keeps up on testing the water, you should be good to go. Just don’t “go” in the tub, OK? We’re all adults here.

The Intex comes with a more basic, floating dispenser with a chlorine tab inside that many of us have seen before. According to a few reviewers, the dispenser is very small and not all that helpful. You may have to purchase a more effective dispenser of your choice, depending on your individual needs. But hey – it's free. Don’t look a gift chlorine tab in the mouth.

Special features
The Coleman spa features a FreezeShield heating function, which prevents the inner components from freezing in cold weather, allowing the tub to safely remain outside all year. Because you never know when you’ll want to do as the Nordics do and take a dip during a snowstorm.

The Intex spa cannot be used in temperatures lower then 40°F, but! It has lights!! Yes, the Intex comes with color-changing LED lights for a unique nighttime experience. It also has 2 headrests, for what it’s worth!
