Out of all the different robot vacuum manufacturers currently on the market, iRobot is by far the most successful, and popular, manufacturer. There are a variety of reasons for this – one of which is the fact that they were one of the first manufacturers of robot vacuums – but the biggest reason why iRobot is so successful is that they continue to develop and advance the technology that is used in robot vacuums, consistently refining and reinventing it.
Robot vacuums would be not what they are today, without iRobot. And, the same applies to the Roomba, as well, which has revolutionized robot vacuums and set the standard for robot vacuum design.
For this reason, we’re going to be looking at two of the best iRobot Roomba robot vacuums that you can find, today. We’re going to be looking at the iRobot Roomba 614, and the iRobot Roomba 690.
Now, these are both fantastic robot vacuums, and they both come with some amazing features and attributes that make the entire vacuuming experience so simple and easy, but they also have a variety of differences that distinguish them from one another. And, these differences are very important to note, because they change how you vacuum, and how these robot vacuums, well, vacuum.
That’s why, today, we’re going to be looking at these two robot vacuums, and looking at what it is, exactly, that they have to offer. However, before we do that, we’re going to define what, exactly, a robot vacuum is. That way you have a greater understanding of what the intention and purpose behind a robot vacuum is, making it easier for you to understand which one of these robot vacuums is the best one for you.
What Is A Robot Vacuum?
A robot vacuum is very different, and yet, very similar, from a regular vacuum. Robot vacuums are quite small, often housed within a circular frame, and they’re very short. The reason for this is so that they can move around with ease, and they won’t become stuck in doorways and other small spaces. And, the short height makes it much easier for them to go underneath furniture, as well as other things so that they can clean underneath.
What separates robot vacuums from other vacuums, though, is the fact that a robot vacuum is not something you have to control manually. Instead, using a variety of sensors that allow the robot vacuum to know where it is, and where it needs to be, a robot vacuum can move on its own, cleaning whatever is in its path, without needing you to tell it what to clean or where to move. Although, those features are available, as well.
Ultimately, a robot vacuum is a vacuum that relies on its sensors and processor, rather than you. You can automate the entire vacuuming process using a robot vacuum, and there is no need for you to control the vacuum, or anything of that sort manually.
iRobot Roomba 614
We’re going to start right off with the iRobot Roomba 614. This is a very basic robot vacuum, and it doesn’t have any smartphone functionality, which means you can’t control the settings and features of the vacuum wherever you are. Now, for some people, this is a dealbreaker, but for others, not so much, since you still can create a schedule for the vacuum and automate the vacuuming process.
When cleaning, there are Dual Multi-Surface brushes that are used, and these are on the side of the robot vacuum, to sweep up all kinds of different dirt and debris. And then, these brushes push it into the main suction pathway, which is where the main brush is, and this suction pathway is in the middle of the robot vacuum. On the side of the vacuum, there is an Edge-Sweeping Brush, which is used to brush up the dirt and debris that is on the side of whatever space the vacuum is currently vacuuming in.
As the iRobot Roomba 614 cleans, and as it shifts from surface to surface, it can detect when it changes surfaces, and then it can adjust its height, so that the brushes remain as close to the surface as possible, making the vacuuming experience as easy and as effortless as it can be. For example, if you are using the iRobot Roomba 614 on a carpeted surface, and then it moves to a tile floor, the vacuum will adjust its height, ensuring that the brushes are level with the tile floor, so that the dirt and debris on that floor are easily gathered and swept up.
All of these brushes and cleaning modes are aligned with the three-stage cleaning system that is exclusive to the robot vacuums that iRobot has developed. In every iRobot robot vacuum, there is a three-stage cleaning system, and this cleaning system consists of loosening up the dirt, dust, and debris, through the use of the brushes, and then lifting it into the space where the vacuum is then able to suck it up with ease, throwing it into the dirt tank.
One of the things that all of the iRobot robot vacuums excel at is the sensors that they use to clean your home thoroughly. Fortunately, the iRobot Roomba 614 is certainly no different, in that respect, and through the use of a multitude of different sensors, the iRobot Roomba 614 navigates around your home, finds the best cleaning paths, avoids all of the different objects that it might accidentally collide with, while also detecting especially dirty spots on your floor. When it detects these spots – and this is part of the “Dirt Detect” feature – it activates the necessary suction settings to clean those spots properly, and then once it has done that, it continues to move throughout your home, cleaning it.
Ultimately, the iRobot Roomba 614 is a fantastic robot vacuum that is quite inexpensive, as well. It’s one of the best Roomba models out there, but it’s also important to note that there is no smartphone functionality, which means you have to use the remote control to set up things like scheduling, and activating the different cleaning modes.
iRobot Roomba 690
With the iRobot Roomba 690, you are getting a robot vacuum that has a couple of extra features, in comparison to the iRobot Roomba 614, as well as a lot of very similar features that are, nevertheless, executed very well.
Just as with the iRobot Roomba 614, you have the three-stage cleaning system that iRobot has used for almost all of their Roomba vacuums, as well as the same brushes and same general cleaning set up. Now, this system works very well, and so it doesn’t need to be different.
The biggest difference between the iRobot Roomba 690, and the iRobot Roomba 614 is the fact that the iRobot Roomba 690 allows you to control and activate all of the features that it offers, using your smartphone. As long as you have a Wi-Fi connection, and as long as the iRobot Roomba 690 has a Wi-Fi connection of some sort, you can do this. You can go on your smartphone and, using the app that iRobot has developed, turn the vacuum on, or off. Create a custom schedule for the vacuum. Tell the vacuum to recharge. Along with various other features and settings that make the entire vacuuming process very easy and very simple.
Ultimately, that is the biggest difference between the two robot vacuums, and with this extra functionality, the entire process of using the vacuum is made a lot simpler, and a lot more hands-off, as well, in comparison to the iRobot Roomba 614.
To better control where the robot vacuum goes, you can use a Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier, which is a simple device that, when you set it up, emits a signal that tells the robot vacuum, as it is moving around your home, not to cross that barrier. You can set it up in a doorway, forcing the robot vacuum to thoroughly clean your bedroom or any other space that you wish to clean with an extra degree of thoroughness.
If there is a flaw with the iRobot Roomba 690, it’s that this is a fairly expensive robot vacuum. At least, in comparison to the iRobot Roomba 614. But, you do need to consider the fact that you are paying for both quality, and extra functionality, and this extra functionality makes the process of vacuuming a lot easier and more efficient, since you always have direct control over the vacuum and how, and what, it is cleaning.
If you want a very simple and very easy-to-use robot vacuum, you can’t go wrong with the iRobot Roomba 614. However, if you want a robot vacuum that offers more functionality, and more direct control over the vacuuming process, the iRobot Roomba 690 is the better choice.
