Neato Robotics is a modern robotics company that specializes in making “Smart” products. Smart products are products that use modern information technology – specifically, The Internet – to automate the different aspects of your home. Vacuuming just happens to be one such aspect that Neato Robotics is automating, and with their Botvac line of robot vacuums, they’ve done a great job at making the process incredibly easy and efficient.
Now, there are quite a few different models of Botvac. This can make it a bit tricky to find the right vacuum for you. So, in this article, we’re going to be looking at five different Botvac models. The D3, D4, D5, D6, and D7. Each one is quite similar, in many ways, but they each possess their own strengths and unique features that set them apart from the other robot vacuums on the market. By reading this article, you’ll be able to get a much better idea of what these vacuums excel at, and which Botvac is the best one for you and the needs that you have.
Before we get into the article, however, one thing that you need to remember is that most of these products are a bit more expensive than those of, say, iRobot. Neato Robotics does specialize in making products that are more “premium” and advanced than some of the more popular brands, and this does come with a price tag that’s slightly larger.
Neato Botvac D3
The Neato BotVac D3 is the cheapest model on this list. It is an excellent robotic vacuum that, while lacking the features and extensive capabilities of the other models on this list, always manages to do an excellent job vacuuming.
First off, you’ll notice it’s shaped like the letter “D.” This is why it is known as the “D3.” Now, this shape, along with some large core brushes, enable it to clean corners and smaller spaces. A feature that many robotic vacuums lack.
Using a technology known as “LaserSmart”, the D3 is able to navigate around your home and map each individual space, while cleaning. During the cleaning process, it moves in a straight line, rather than in the more zig-zagged manner that other robot vacuums clean in. This does have its own flaws – in some ways, these kinds of vacuums are more prone to missing certain areas that need to be vacuumed – but it does ensure that, for the most part, everything is thoroughly cleaned.
Of course, this would be kind of pointless if the vacuum itself was limited in the floor types it can clean. Fortunately, it’s not. The D3 cleans tile, laminate, carpet, and wood floors with no problems.
As for the battery life, on a single charge, it lasts for a total of sixty-minutes. This is why it’s ideal for apartments and smaller homes. However, if you do have a larger home, the vacuum will recharge itself.
Finally, the D3 has smartphone functionality. Using your smartphone, or Amazon Echo, Google Home, or Apple Watch, you can create schedules and turn on the vacuum, as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection.
Neato Botvac D4
Just like the D3, the Neato D4 uses LaserSmart technology to map out your entire home, allowing for it to clean in a straight line, thoroughly, without relying on random algorithmic patterns. Even when the room is completely dark, the vacuum can still clean.
One of the really great features of the D4 is that you can set up these virtual markers – using the official smartphone app – that tell the vacuum where not to go. So, for example, if you only want the vacuum to clean a specific room, then you can put a virtual marker right by the door that leads out of the room.
You also have the ability to create specific schedules for the vacuum, and you can turn on the vacuum anywhere, as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection for both your smartphone, and the vacuum.
Really, this is an excellent feature, and especially convenient, since most other vacuums require you to use physical sensors to block off certain areas. But, with the D4, you only need to press a button on your smartphone.
However, one of the biggest improvements is that the filter is greatly improved. It’s seventy-percent bigger than the filter found on the D4, and this enables you to pick up all kinds of little allergens that the D3 would miss, due to its, comparatively, small filter.
Instead of sixty-minutes of battery-life, you have seventy-five minutes, and just like the D3, it recharges on its own, without any direct input on your part.
Neato Botvac D5
The D4 and D5 are very similar. There aren’t too many distinct differences between the two, however, there are a couple that should be noted, because they do enhance the overall experience, and depending on the kind of vacuuming needs you have, they are quite notable.
First off, the battery life is now ninety-minutes, instead of seventy-five. This is great for larger homes and floor plans. Now, if you have a really big home, then it may not be quite ideal, but it is a noticeable improvement, and it is a lot more convenient for those with larger spaces.
Second of all, the brush is a lot stronger, too. Now, it can capture allergens that are as small as ten microns. If you have asthma or frequently suffer from allergies, take note of this, because the Neato Botvac D5 Robot Vacuum is excellent at cleaning up dust and spilled powders, as well as the standard dirt and debris.
Everything else, though, is exactly the same. You still have smartphone functionality, and the excellent LaserSmart technology. Along with that, the brush is also the same. It’s a standard combo brush that, just like the previous two models, works well on every different surface type.
In the end, the only two differences are the battery-life, and filter strength. The filter strength is more notable if you are asthmatic or have frequent allergies. But, if you have a bigger home, then the battery life is very notable.
Neato Botvac D6
Right off the bat, you’ll notice that while the filter is the same, the core brush on the Neato BotVac D6 Robot Vacuum has been greatly enhanced. It’s seventy-percent bigger than the brushes on the previous models, and this makes it especially effective for vacuuming up things like pet hair, along with dust and allergens of all sorts.
Then, you’ll notice that the battery life is now one-hundred and twenty-minutes, instead of ninety-minutes, which is a nice improvement. This is combined with a new feature that allows the vacuum to store up to three unique floor plans at any one time. If you have a multi-story home, the previous vacuums would have to rescan each floor while they were cleaning. But now, the vacuum can store the plans without needing to do any rescanning. This also works well with the Virtual No-Go feature, allowing you to set all kinds of markers for places where the vacuum shouldn’t go, and when the vacuum goes onto another floor, you don’t need to reset the markers.
What makes the D6 really stand out is the fact that it works so well with bigger homes. Every feature is designed to make cleaning your big home easy and effortless. So, if you have a big home with a few stories – and pets, as well – then this is the perfect robotic vacuum for you, because it makes everything very convenient.
Neato Botvac D7
Finally, we have the Neato D7, the most advanced vacuum on this list. Using LaserSmart technology, once again, the vacuum cleans in straight lines, maps your home, and lets you set up virtual markers to designate where the vacuum can, and cannot, go. However, the D7 now has a “Spot Cleaning” feature, enabling you to designate certain spots that get dirtier than others. When you do this, the vacuum will give more attention to those specific parts of the room.
There is a new mode that only the D7 has, out of all of these models. It’s called “Turbo Mode” and it turns on the suction power to the highest it can go, allowing the vacuum to suck up everything in its path. Combine this with the filter, and you get the most effective and efficient of all of the vacuums on this list.
The battery life is the same as the D6, but the D7 has a feature where, when it’s out of battery life, it will recharge and then, based on the floor plans that it has saved, calculate how much more battery life it needs to complete the cleaning job, and charge accordingly. If you have a bigger home, this is incredibly convenient.
Other than those excellent new features, this is very similar to the D6. However, it enhances the features of the D6, and gives you more control over what you’re cleaning and how you’re cleaning, making for a very convenient overall experience.
Well, that’s it for this Neato Botvac Comparison. We hope you found it helpful!
