Shark is a brand that has been around for many years. They are known for putting out high-quality products such as vacuums, steam cleaners, clothing irons, and many more. Due to their status as high-quality, they continue to do very good business, and they continue to innovate and enter into new marketplaces. This is very apparent when you consider their line of robot vacuums – the SHARK ION product line – and just how successful those robot vacuums have been.

SHARK ION Robot Vacuum R75 vs. RV720 vs. R85

If you are thinking about, or have been considering, purchasing either a Shark ION RV720, a Shark ION R75, or a Shark ION R85, then this is the right article for you. In this article, we’re looking at all three of those SHARK ION robot vacuum cleaners and comparing them with each other, and looking at the distinct features that each one has, enabling you to make the right choice when it comes to which one to purchase.

The Shark ION RV720

Immediately after opening up that box, you’ll notice the sleek and aesthetically pleasing design, mixed with the weight of the robot vacuum, which is quite light; only five-and-a-half pounds. You’ll also notice that the Shark ION RV720 comes with a small remote control which gives you access to those same features located on the top of the vacuum, while also giving you the ability to create customized schedules for the vacuum.

SHARK ION Robot Vacuum RV720

On the top of the vacuum, there are three individual buttons. Clean – this, obviously, begins the cleaning process. Dock – this tells the vacuum to recharge. Spot – this is a feature that enables the vacuum to clean one particular spot in a room or space thoroughly.

Unlike other robotic vacuums, though, the Shark ION RV720 does not have any smartphone or smart home functionality, which means that this remote control is the only way to create these schedules and to automate this process.

For some people, this is an immediate turn-off, because it does limit you quite a bit. With a smartphone, as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can turn on the vacuum and have it begin cleaning your home, even while you’re at work or at the grocery store. With a remote, however, you can only do that within a very specific vicinity, and if you aren’t within that vicinity, then you can’t actually turn on the vacuum and use it.

Regardless of that, the real question is “How well does it clean?” And the answer is “very well”, but let’s get a bit more into the specifics of how it cleans.

Using a self-cleaning brushroll – very convenient, especially if you have pets who shed everywhere – hairs of any length are easily captured, as are things like dander and dust and other types of allergens. For daily usage – or every other day, for that matter – this is a great vacuum, since this simple, yet very efficient, self-cleaning brushroll enables you to prevent any excess buildup of those things.

There is also the inclusion of dual spinning side brushes that can take in dust and debris and anything else that is located on the corners and edges of your home.

When you combine this with the self-cleaning brushroll, you get a very nice package that is very thorough and effective when it comes to cleaning. All of this is further enhanced by sensors that, while simple, are more than sufficient when it comes to navigation.

Emptying the dustbin for this vacuum is quite easy. The dustbin is located on the side of the vacuum, and so you can simply pull it out, and dump the contents into a garbage bin.

Finally, in terms of battery life, you have one-hour on a single charge, through the use of a standard lithium-ION battery. This isn’t a lot, necessarily, but it is a decent amount – although, it does take three hours to recharge – and it is important to note that the SHARK ION RV720 is really meant for light cleanings, rather than any kind of deep clean.

If you are looking for a robot vacuum that is meant for deep cleanings, this really isn’t the right one for you. But, if you want something that is good for light cleanings, then this is a perfect vacuum for just that!

The Shark ION R75

One of the biggest differences that you will immediately notice is that the R75 model is compatible with smartphones and smart home systems, such as Amazon Echo. Using the extra functionality, you can easily turn on the vacuum and tell it to start cleaning, even when you are far away from your home. The same goes for scheduling, as well as spot cleaning, and even telling the vacuum to dock, so it can charge its battery.

Simple as these particular additions may be, they add one extra element to the whole package, which greatly enhances the convenience of it all, making it a much easier and more streamlined experience.

Other than that particular addition, though, there really isn’t a lot that has been added or improved upon. You still have the same self-cleaning brushroll and dual spinning side brushes, along with the sensors that, once again, do a very nice job aiding the vacuum in navigating your home and individual spaces, even if they are tight and full of obstacles. Even the battery life is the exact same, at one-hour for a single charge, and three-hours to recharge.

Ultimately, the Shark ION R75 is an improvement upon the incredibly sturdy foundation that the Shark ION RV720 offered, but these improvements are particularly broad, and as such, if you have no issues with the RV720, then there isn’t much of a reason to upgrade. Unless, of course, you want the flexibility that the smartphone and smart home functionality, which in that case, the R75 would be a very wise purchase.

The Shark ION R85

With the Shark ION R85, you not only have functionality with smartphones and Amazon Echo but also Google Home. Now, the basic features and functionality remain the exact same, but the addition of Google Home support is very nice.

Just like the previous two Shark ION models, the basic features are the same. A self-cleaning brushroll with dual edge brushes – although, you now have corner brushes, as well – and powerful suction. But, there are a few distinct additions that are notable.

SHARK ION Robot Vacuum R85 vs. R75 vs. RV720

First off, the Shark ION R85 is what’s described as an “XL Capacity” robot vacuum. In comparison to the previous two models, the SHARK ION R85 has a significantly larger dustbin, which enables you to have longer cleanings that are uninterrupted.

There is also the addition of “Max Mode” which gives you, according to Shark, “three-times” as much suction as the Shark ION R75. This mode is designed for those situations where you need some extra suction in order to thoroughly clean something, such as a carpet, for example.

That’s another thing you’ll notice. The R85 actually works very well with both traditional floors and flooring, as well as carpeting. This is somewhat of a rarity in the world of robot vacuums since a lot of them aren’t always the most agile or efficient when it comes to vacuuming carpets, especially thicker carpets that are a bit denser. Fortunately, the R85 is actually very good at vacuuming those thicker carpets, which is very nice, especially if you have a few of those carpets.

Now, according to Shark, the sensor system has been upgraded to something known as “Smart Sensor Navigation 2.0”, which enables the vacuum to be a bit more agile when it comes to creating new pathways around objects and obstacles. This is enhanced through the use of “BotBoundary Strips” which serve as tools that enable you to, essentially, command the vacuum to only be used in one particular space/area, rather than giving it the freedom to roam wherever it pleases. Instead, you can use these BotBoundary Strips to force the vacuum to clean, with a great deal of thoroughness, one particular space or area in a room, or even the entirety of a smaller room.

Finally, the last notable addition is that of “Quiet Mode” which, simply enough, is a mode that turns the main features down, so that the vacuum is quiet and not disruptive or loud. Naturally, it isn’t going to be as powerful in this mode, but that may not be very important to you.

Ultimately, the R85 is a great vacuum cleaner that has all of the excellent features and functionality that you could want in a Shark robot vacuum, or any robot vacuum, for that matter. It’s affordable and easy to use. But, at the same time, if you don’t have a huge need or desire for this kind of functionality, then the Shark ION RV720 is a great option. Or, if you need smartphone functionality, the Shark ION R75. Both of which are great, if less powerful, but they serve their main purposes incredibly well.
