In this article, we are taking a look at the Black + Decker 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner. This portable air conditioner unit also comes with a 10,000 BTU heater.
You’re going to learn about the variety of interesting features that this portable air conditioner/heater offers. You’ll also learn about its various flaws, although there aren’t many of them. Finally, you’ll learn if this is the right portable air conditioner/heater for you!
Now, let’s begin by taking a look at the myriad of features that Black + Decker has put together!
So, What Does This Portable Air Conditioner/Heater Offer Me?
Weighing 68 pounds, this is definitely a heavier unit, in comparison to many others. If you aren’t fond of devices that take up a significant amount of space – and are difficult to move around – this may not be the right one for you.
Specifically, moving it up and down stairs is difficult. Fortunately, there are wheels on the bottom, which does make it much easier to move around, if you are only moving it throughout one floor.
However, this heaviness is for a good reason. The motor that this portable air conditioner/heater offers is quite powerful. When using the air conditioning, you can cool a room that is between 150 square-feet, and 250 square feet.
Now, when you’re using the heating, you can keep a room that is 200 square-feet to 325 square-feet nice and warm.
Both of these modes work exceptionally well. There are no difficulties in using them, and while the space that they cover may not be particularly large, the features do work well. And, of course, if you keep things locked up, you can allow that cool air – or warm air, if you’re using the heating mode – to circulate around your home.
Before we go any further, it needs to be mentioned that you can only use this device on windows that are either sliding or double-hung. Crank windows are incompatible with this device.
Using vertical motion, the device is able to propel the air around your home. This creates a steady and consistent airflow within your home. Ensuring that the temperature you are creating flows to the other parts of your home, rather than just that particular space.
You can access the filter by simply sliding it out. This isn’t a filter that needs to be replaced frequently. Instead, when it’s dirty, simply take it to the sink and rinse it. It doesn’t take a lot to clean the filter, and once it’s dry, put it back into the machine, and that’s that.
When it comes to the cooling and heating systems of this device, they are very efficient and simple. You don’t need any kind of bucket or drainage system in place. The main unit combines the cooling unit, a fan, and a dehumidification and heating mode. These are all very simple modes that can be accessed easily. Regardless of which mode you use, the device is very quiet. Running at only 75 decibels on the highest setting, you can run it at night, and it shouldn’t affect your sleep very much at all.
Due to the electronics that are on display, there is a streamlined sensibility that lurks behind the entirety of this air conditioner/heater. On the very top of the device, there is a small LED screen that tells you what the current temperature is. To the left and right of the LED screen, there are small symbols that light up when you have selected a specific mode.
Right below the LED screen and symbols, there are a series of small buttons. Buttons that correspond to functions such as changing the speed of the fans, alternating between cooling and heating, and arrow keys that let you turn the temperature up or down.
Ultimately, the biggest flaw with this device is the fact that it is very bulky. And, this really restricts the overall flexibility of the device. Along with that, you can’t use this device with crank windows.
These are small annoyances, but they do add up. However, at the end of the day, this is a really great air conditioner/heater.
If you want a simple and affordable air conditioner/heater, the Black + Decker 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is a pretty decent choice! It’s simple and easy to use, and it works very well for both cooling and heating.
But, do remember that it is a heavier device and rather bulky. It takes up a lot of space. So, if that will be a problem for you, it would be best to find another device.
