Power Versus Maneuverability
Snow Joe SJ627E vs. 24V-SS13-XR Overview
It’s winter, there’s no getting around that. Winter in this part of the world means snow, snow, and even more snow! Life goes on underneath this heavy white deluge, so you need the best machine possible to clear your path. Whether that means blasting a parking lot clear or scraping your way up a twisty driveway, Snow Joe’s got you covered.
Today we’ll look at the Snow Joe SJ627E, a powerhouse of a machine meant for large driveways, and the Snow Joe 24V-SS13-XR, a lean but no less effective solution for quick and easy pick-up on walkways and paths.
Specifications
The SJ627E is a wheeled snowblower with dimensions of 23.4” x 22.0” x 26.0”. It weighs 34.8 lbs and requires an electric cord to run. The 24V-SS13-XR is a cordless snow shovel that’s smaller and lighter and has dimensions of 14.5” x 12.5” x 25.0” and a weight of 13.5 lbs. The XR uses the Snow Joe exclusive iON+ 24-Volt lithium-ion battery system for its power source.
The SJ627E’s almost 35 lbs aren’t unmanageable, but it does seem hulking compared to the XR’s featherweight 13.5 lbs. The SJ627E requires some set-up and access to a power outlet; Snow Joe warns not to use an extension cord for it over 100 ft (30m) in length.
The XR, being cordless and battery-powered, can easily be called a ‘grab-n-go’ solution with no more set-up required than walking out your door (and, you know, charging the battery).
Clearing Path and Usage
The SJ627E’s steel augur cuts a 22-inch wide by 13-inch deep path with each run. It’s designed for larger-size driveways and walkways and features dual LED headlights to deal with surprise midnight flurries.
The 24V-SS13-XR (that I’ll only refer to from now on as the XR) doesn’t have enough space on it for headlights, but it does have a dual handle design to eliminate the need to bend your back as you shovel– a lifesaver for those of us with slipped discs. It’s a lightweight machine good for clearing off porches, stairways, and smaller driveways– anywhere the SJ627E’s solid frame is too large to reach. Its clearing path is 13 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
Power and Snow Throwing Distance
The SJ627E is, as mentioned before, dependent on an electrical cord and uses a 600 W motor. It has a snow-throwing distance of 25 ft and a 180-degree directional chute for you to aim that snow through.
The XR has a 400 W motor. Its two-blade augur throws snow up to 20 ft away, and there’s no chute to direct your output.
Plowing Capacity
Unsurprisingly, the SJ627E has a much larger plowing capacity, able to process 840 lbs of snow per minute. The XR still manages a respectable plowing capacity of 300 lbs of snow per minute, since it’s meant for smaller areas than its counterpart.
Overall
There’s not much point in saying which model is ‘better’ when the two are clearly meant for distinctly different purposes. The XR is a lightweight, cordless electric shovel small enough to store in your hall closet when you need it to clear small areas like your deck or front steps.
It’s about as suited to handle plowing a multi-car driveway as a goldfish is to navigating Lake Ontario: it can do it, but it won’t be happy about it. Reviewers praise the ease of set-up for the XR and the convenience of the dual-handle feature for avoiding back pain. All in all, the 24V-SS13-XR is an electric snow shovel to buy when you want to handle light pickup quickly and conveniently.
The SJ627E’s larger motor and a sturdier design make it perfect for the large driveways and other areas the XR would struggle it. It’s built to clear out a bigger volume of snow at a faster pace than the XR; this is the snowblower to buy when there are heavy storms ahead. Compared to gas-operated snowblowers, people tend to choose electric models like the SJ627E because of the relative ease of maintenance and cost efficiency.

Snow Joe SJ627E vs. 24V-SS13-XR Final Words
One of the drawbacks to electric designs is the dependency on the electrical cord when there’s a job too heavy for battery packs to handle. You’re restricted in operating range by the length of the model’s cord connection, with the added caveat that the use of any cord length over 100 ft is explicitly advised against by the manufacturers themselves. Still, if you’ve got the area to spare, the SJ627E is the snowblower for you.
